Can anyone play any character?
In most kits, yes — characters are written without fixed gender or pronouns, so cast whoever you want in whatever role they were born to overact. Some kits run an all-male or all-female cast because the theme demands it — the listing will tell you which. Either way: no swapping, no adapting, no "just pretend the husband is a wife." Every role was written for exactly who's playing it.
Do I have to write or improvise anything?
Nothing to write. The host gets a scripted opening monologue and murder narrations to read aloud, and the killer gets a scripted confession for the finale — those bookends are handled word for word. Everything in between is where your guests come in: nobody reads lines off a page. Each character arrives with a full life — secrets, grudges, things to share, drama to start — and the night happens through playing them, not reciting them. It's not a script. It's a stage, fully set. The performance is yours.
How many people can play?
Each kit has a core cast of eight that carries the mystery, plus twelve optional characters for bigger parties — the listing gives you the exact numbers. Optional roles add chaos and suspects without changing the outcome, so a last-minute cancellation never breaks the night.
How dirty is it?
It's adults-only, and it's not an accident. Innuendo, scandal, and filth levels vary by kit — each listing tells you how hot it runs. The host materials always stay clean and functional; the drama lives in the characters, where it belongs.
How much prep is it for the host?
One read of the host guide, some printing and cutting, casting your friends, and sending out what the guide tells you to send. The kit is built so the host always knows what happens next — you get the glory.
How long does the night run?
Most groups run two and a half to three hours — longer if your friends are hams. They're hams.
What do I need besides the kit?
A printer, your guest list, and drinks. Costume suggestions are included per character — commitment levels may vary, and someone will show up in a full look.
